Division Fire Chief David Boozer

I'm proud to announce that the Columbia County Board of Commissioners and it's Fire Department has partnered with the Florida Department of Elder Affairs and has been designated as a Communities for a Lifetime Community. This initiative is to make Florida a friendlier place to live for people of all ages and that they may be as independent as long as possible and remain in their homes and in the communities they love. The State of Florida has the highest percentage of elders of any state in the nation and our elder population will continue to increase reaching numbers without precedent in the first part of the 21st Century. We as the Columbia County Fire Department share the vision and responsibility to improve the life of all citizens so they can prepare for and enjoy aging in place throughout their life. In following this vision which mirrors our own Mission Statement, we realize the importance of maintaining ones security and independence and have identified a means for our agency to assist in providing this necessary need. The Columbia County Fire Department was awarded a grant which will allow us to provide quarterly Fire Prevention Meetings with our Senior Adults, providing education in the areas of Smoke Detectors, Home Safety and seasonal safety concerns. It also allows for our agency to survey area seniors homes with regards to their current smoke detector and/or carbon monoxide detectors, replacing those which are 10 years or older with current and update devices. This service is available to any Senior Adult living within the Lake City/Columbia County area at no cost.

The Columbia County Fire Department is committed to establishing a progressive Fire Prevention Program specifically designed for our senior adults with-in Lake City and Columbia County. Together with the assist of The Department of Elder Affairs we are working to make Columbia County a Community for a Lifetime.
